Ahead of Exeter City Men’s dedicated Her Game Too fixture against Fleetwood Town and Exeter City Women’s Devon derby against Plymouth Argyle, we are delighted to announce that Josh Gordon has become the Men’s team ambassador for the campaign.

Her Game Too is a campaign dedicated to tackling sexism and discrimination in sport, helping to create an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of gender, can enjoy and participate in football without fear of harassment or discrimination.

Exeter City was one of the first clubs to partner with Her Game Too in October 2021, when the Men’s and Women’s teams hosted the campaign’s first-ever double-header, demonstrating the club’s commitment to making football a welcoming environment for all.

Josh, who joined the Grecians in the summer, has already shown a keen interest in supporting the Women’s team and was delighted to take on the ambassador role, with his own family experiences helping to shape his passion for the campaign.

Speaking about becoming an ambassador, he said: “I think the biggest thing is now being a dad to a little girl and knowing what restrictions girls can face when it comes to sport, especially football.

“I want to make sure I can do the best I can to give her the best opportunity, if that's the direction she wants to go in.”

Josh also highlighted the importance of ensuring football is an inclusive environment for women, children and families from all backgrounds.

“It's important that we show women and young families that football is a welcoming environment for everyone. That's important for multicultural communities as well. Women, kids and parents need to see the strengths within football and what it can offer our community.”

His motivation also comes from seeing the opportunities that were not always available to members of his own family.

“My family is very women-dominated. I've got an older sister and a younger sister. She played a lot of netball and also played a bit of football, but dropped out quite late on because of the lack of opportunities.

“She was very good at the sports she played, especially netball. To see the talent and ability she had, knowing she probably could have gone further, was difficult.

“Now, having a daughter, that's what I want to try to help with and make sure she doesn't fall out of sport.”

Since arriving at St James Park, Josh has attended Exeter City Women’s matches and has been impressed by both the standard of football and the club’s efforts to grow support for the team.

“Since I've been here, the push to get people to come along and back the team has been fantastic,” he said.

“It's been great for some of the lads to come and watch and support, because I know the women's team also come to support us. The way they promote the team through social media content is one of the best I've seen.

“The football is really good. At other places I've been, I've never really been exposed to it in the same way. I've only really seen it on TV, so to be there and see the crowds they get really shows that the efforts the club are making to grow the game are working.”

With the Men’s dedicated Her Game Too fixture against Fleetwood Town providing another opportunity to raise awareness, Josh believes it is important for everyone at the club to continue showing their support.

“I think Exeter as a club are doing really well to promote that, and the numbers they get at the ground show that. Hopefully, we can continue to get more people along.

“I think I speak for the lads as well when I say it's important that we show our support for the women's team, just as they support us at our games.”
