Winger delighted with U21 showing
Following the Grecians’ remarkable passage to the quarter-final of the inaugural Under-21 Premier League Cup, City winger David Wheeler spoke of the confidence that is coursing through the veins of the young crop.
“We’re obviously really chuffed,” said Wheeler. “There’s so much confidence amongst us at the moment – we go out and we feel like if we play in the way the way we can and the way Robbo sets us out to play, we’ll match most teams in the competition.”
With the draw being made imminently, the summer-signing from Staines isn’t fazed at the prospect of who they face in the last eight – with Man City, Chelsea, Newcastle and Arsenal all potential opponents.
“It doesn’t affect the way we’re going out to play – as long as we go and play the way we know we can, it doesn’t matter who we play,” he continued. “To get to the final and win, we’ve got to beat everyone anyway.
“We were probably one of the smallest names going into it at the start, but it doesn’t make a difference. The coaching we’ve had and that the boys have had for a number of years has obviously got them to a stage where they can compete – especially against players that are used to having so much time on the ball.”
