Exeter City defender Aaron Martin says the Grecians are keen to continue their impressive performances in defence as they make another long journey north to take on Morecambe this Saturday in Sky Bet League Two.
The Grecians are yet to be beaten in the league in their opening four matches and have conceded just once so far, and the City defender wants the side to continue that form going forward.
He said: “It’s about hard work and everyone knows what we need to do, the shape has been great, and everyone is working well together and dying for the cause. As long as we keep it going and keep the defensive side of it then we can let the attackers go and attack.
“It’s been great, we’re unbeaten at the moment and I think if we can just continue that and start adding a few more goals to our game then we will do really well this season.
Aaron also felt the side’s performance in midweek against Oldham warranted all three points after they put on another accomplished defensive display and had a number of opportunities to go ahead.
The defender continued: “The way that we played warranted the points, I think defensively we were really good, and it was just one of those nights where the ball wouldn’t go in.
“I think we had three or four chances to score, and if Marts’ (Lee Martin) effort goes in then it would have been a completely different game and we could have gone and got a few more. It was a frustrating one and two points dropped for us, but we move on to Saturday.”
On the test that Morecambe will pose on Saturday, Aaron is expecting a similar encounter to that of Oldham earlier in the week and says the side will be looking to replicate their defensive display but take advantage of their chances created.
He explained: “I think it will be quite similar to Tuesday, as long as we do what we did the other night and have a bit more attacking flair to it and take the chances that we get then we should be ok.
“We’re in good form and they’re in good form and I think it’s always a decent game against them because they’re a hard team to beat, but we need to do our job."
City will also have Tom Parkes back available following his suspension to add to competition for places in the starting XI, and Aaron believes the side have good defensive options which is helping everyone to step up their performance level.
“There is a lot of competition here, some really good defensive players,” said Aaron. “Everyone needs to be on top of their game to stay in the team and I think that is why everyone is being consistent at the moment, because everyone knows that you need to have that consistency to stay in the team."
