Matt Jay says he will look to guide and help the younger players through the Leasing.com Trophy match against Ipswich Town tomorrow if selected to play.
Matt, aged 23, is still one of the younger members of City’s first team squad, but having made his debut in this competition as in September 2013, and made over 80 first team appearances for the Grecians, it will be on him to take on a more leadership role.
“I came through in similar circumstances,” he said. “It is good to see the young players coming through and getting a chance but there also be some experience out there tomorrow as well and we will be looking to help the youngsters out for sure.”
“I think the manager will be looking for some wise heads and some experienced players to help and I am not getting any younger so I am probably one of those know and hopefully I can help guide them on the pitch tomorrow.”
In Ipswich, City face a high-flying League One side which is something Matt says the players are looking forward to having already tasted success against higher league opponents in Oxford United in the previous round.
“We are really excited to tests ourselves and hopefully put out a good performance and continue the good form that we are in,” he said. “In the last round, I think we were as good as Oxford were if not better and obviously the result would say that as well. So we are very much looking forward to the match against Ipswich and we feel that we can put out a performance that says this is what we are about and how good we can be and I think the Oxford result will really help us in that.”
