The most recent winners in the Carpetright We Win You Win competition, which sees a grassroots sports club being awarded £500 every time Exeter City win, are Hatherleigh Youth Football Club and Sidmouth Town Junior Viking’s under 10s and under 12s girls’ teams.
Thanks to Carpetright, our fantastic front of shirt sponsor, a total of 21 south west teams have benefited from the competition over the last 11 months – with donations totaling a huge £10,500.
Hatherleigh Youth Football Club will use the donation to provide bursaries for disadvantaged families to ensure all who want to, can play football with them.
Head coach, Adam Hill, said: "Despite being a tiny Devon town, we serve all the surrounding communities and now have over 120 children registered. Rural isolation means our travel costs and time are greater than many clubs based in Exeter or Barnstaple, who we often have to play.” (A feeling Exeter City know well!). This cost falls to parents who transport their children.
"Our annual fees are £125 including registration and match kit, which is a lot for some families, especially with multiple children. We are setting up a bursary fund for families who are struggling to find this money. This will support part payment of fees or a reduction for siblings, making football more affordable for all."
Bryn Clapp, secretary of Sidmouth Town Junior Football Club, said the club had recently launched girls’ football for the first time.
He added: "We now have two new teams at under 10s and under 12s and we would very much love to have the money to invest in a playing kit and training materials for both age groups."
