Interim boss Kevin Nicholson has given his assessment as the Grecians suffered an uncharacteristic 4-2 defeat at home to Oxford United at St James Park.
City found themselves 4-0 down early in the second half before Jevani Brown and Sonny Cox clawed two back late on, but that did little to lift the mood of dejected Nicholson.
"Anything that could've gone wrong today, did." he said.
"We lost Josh Key this morning through illness, Pierce Sweeney has been unwell and hasn't trained for three days and unfortunately he couldn't continue - it meant we were light on bodies.
"When the game started we look flat and then it just seemed to hit them after the first goal. I'm really disappointed we got oursevles in the position we ended up in.
"I don't think enough of led by example today."
