Defender and vice captain Pierce Sweeney has given his assessment after the Grecians suffered a 4-2 defeat at Plymouth Argyle on Monday night.
Despite a spirited effort against the league leaders, a second half blitz from the home side proved rtoo much for Gary Caldwell's men.
"They're top of the league for a reason but we have come here and given a good account of ourselves," he said.
"When we were ahead we had to be ahead for longer, but that is something we will learn from. We've only had the new manager in for a week and some of us are stuck in our old ways.
"The new manager has new ideas and ways of playing, and we're still early into that process.
"We're happy with a lot of tonight, but there are some things we let ourselves down on."
