New futsal league to be launched in January 2013
Following the success of the last weekend’s futsal tournament, Exeter City Football in the Community are seeking teams to enter a brand new futsal league in the New Year.Newtown FC, pictured above in Exeter City shirts, won FITC’s inaugural tournament at St Peter’s Church of England school in Heavitree on Sunday by triumphing over North Tawton, pictured in yellow and blue stripes.
And now the new league, which will be held in the Sports Hall at St James High School in Beacon Heath, is scheduled to begin on Sunday 6th January 2013.
For those used to traditional five-a-side, futsal offers something a little different. With no walls or boards, and using a smaller ball with less bounce, futsal is the sport that helped some of the football’s greats learn the techniques that took them to stardom. Creativity and improvisation are vital for success, so it’s no surprise that Messi and Ronaldo began their playing careers on the futsal courts.
Jamie Vittles, Head of Community at FITC, said: “We were delighted with the success of the competition and are very keen to get the league up and running. We have been running taster sessions, and we’re hoping to recruit at least six teams to take part in the weekly fixtures.
“Anyone who has played futsal knows how addictive it is and I think footballers in Exeter will love it.”
Teams that register will for the new league will receive free tickets to an Exeter City match at St James’ Park. Players must be aged over-16 and wearing shin pads, trainers and a team playing strip. Each team will pay £16 per fixture.
