Midfielder extends deal until summer
Grecians manager Paul Tisdale was pleased to announce yesterday that midfielder Tommy Doherty has had his contract extended through until the end of the season. The 33-year-old joined originally on a six-month deal in the summer but Tis was happy to be able to retain his services until at least the end of the 2012/13 campaign.
“Tommy’s been extended to the end of the season,” said Tisdale. “It’s very important because I didn’t want to weaken the side by Tommy leaving us.
“We’ve been very happy with Tommy, and he’s obviously happy with us. He’s enjoying his football, and I’m very pleased that [his contract] is no longer a decision. Like other players, we’ll assess his situation at the end of the year.”
Paul was especially keen to praise the qualities that the Northern Irishman has brought in to St James’ Park, on and off the pitch. He has featured 17 times in City colours this year and has been a very positive influence around the club.
“He’s a proper competitor, he’s a very good footballer with an instinctive football mind, and can see the situation in front of him very quickly. He’s a lovely chap to have around and he’s more than happy to be part of this squad here.
“He’s not played every game, but when he has he’s given 100 per cent.”
