Grecians defeat Gosport to set up Plymouth tie
Exeter City Ladies 3
Gosport Borough Ladies 1
FA Women’s Cup first round
Sunday 1st December 2013
Exeter City Ladies earned a place in the second round of the FA Women’s Cup with a 3-1 win against Gosport Borough Ladies.
They will now face Plymouth Argyle in the next round, following Monday morning’s draw. The tie is scheduled to take place on Sunday 12th January 2014, with the date and venue to be confirmed.
Exeter started rather sloppily against Gosport while trying out a new system, and went a goal behind within 10 minutes as the rear-guard was left glaringly exposed from careless possession.
But the Grecians settled and controlled the rest of the first period, with Leah Brooks pulling the strings in midfield. It was Brooks that grabbed the leveller midway through the first period as a well-worked corner routine saw the ball recycled after initially being cleared, and it eventually found its way to her head to nod in.
City had chances to go ahead, but Tash Knapman and Marika Ghiglia were both profligate with pinpoint crosses from Lola Garcia Sanchez.
Gosport started the second period well too and squandered good chances to go ahead. But a tactical switch midway through the second period – pushing Meg Taylor and Vicky Barter further upfield – opened a chance instantly, but Garcia Sanchez could only fire at the goalkeeper.
But persistence paid for City as Knapman combined well with Barter to score, before Barter herself added her name to the scoresheet as she escaped the attentions of the Borough defence and coolly rounded the goalkeeper.
Exeter City Ladies: V.Wright, Taylor, C.Wright, Hine, Simpson (Russell 65), Copp, Brooks, Barter, Knapman, Sanchez, Ghiglia.
