The hosts – themselves in a rich vein of form, having won their previous six games on their own patch – rushed into a three-goal lead before the interval, with Michael Symes, Marcus Holness and Jacques Maghoma all finding the back of the net.
Things got worse for the Grecians 15 minutes into the second period, when the Brewers’ captain hit a rasping shot from outside the area when crossed the line via the underside of the crossbar.
A goal by substitute Guillem Bauza gave City a modicum of belief, and then Scot Bennett’s header clawed City to within two goals with quarter of an hour remaining.
However Burton held on to win, continuing their own promotion charge and dealing a hitch to City’s in the process.
