City development side defeated at Cat & Fiddle
An Exeter City development squad was beaten 3-1 by Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday afternoon, in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Cat & Fiddle.
An experienced Pilgrims side took the lead early in the first period as Max Blanchard buried a firm header into Christy Pym’s goal, off the underside of the crossbar.
The crossbar denied Andres Gurrieri an Argyle second as he shot from distance, before Tom Nichols hit the upright for City after skipping around two challenges.
Argyle netted their second after the interval when Isaac Vassell was brought down in the box, allowing Tyler Harvey to step up and score from 12 yards. A third followed when full-back Andre Blackman put in a teasing cross which sub Connor Riley-Lowe could only touch into his own net.
The Grecians scored the game’s final goal to reduce the arrears, as a Nichols shot was handled – the striker took the resultant spot-kick, which he powered in via the post.
City’s assistant manager Rob Edwards said: “It was a disappointing result, but I’ve got to remind myself as well as the players that these games are not about the result.
“We definitely wanted to win today, but there were some good performances and things to work on.”
