Ladies defeated on opening outing
Exeter City Ladies suffered a setback on their opening game of the 2014/15 season by falling to a 2-1 defeat away at Shanklin. The Isle of Wight-based side started the brighter and certainly looked the hungrier to pick up the second ball and stop the visiting Grecians playing.
Their effort earned the first goal – after winning an aerial battle, Shanklin also had the desire to pick up the pieces and scored a 20-yard effort through Gemma Woodford.
Chloe Parkes’ corner then somehow found its way inside Exeter City’s near post, deceiving the Grecians’ defence and doubling the lead for the hosts.
A change in system for the Grecians allowed a gradual improvement in the second period, pressing the commanding Shanklin central midfielder to disrupt their play.
After another spell of Shanklin pressure, Exeter got a goal back. A ball in behind saw Helen Kukor’s pace utilised for the first time in the game, she stayed composed and slotted the ball under the keeper.
Cutting the deficit gave Exeter a lift and they created a few more chances. In the final few minutes a Kirsty Caunter cross saw Tash Knapman head against the back post after great movement.
The remaining time was not enough for an Exeter comeback, as the start of the season ended with a disappointing result.
