Liverpool legend Grobbelaar thrills a packed audience at the Southgate

Reds legend was guest speaker at Exeter event

Former Liverpool goalkeeping legend Bruce Grobbelaar was the celebrity guest speaker for an evening at the Mercure Southgate hotel last week.

As well as catching the Reds’ Champions League fixture against Ludogorets, over 140 sponsors, guests and Exeter City players were treated to a three course meal, fun and games, auction and tales of Bruce’s career with Liverpool.  The highlight, of course, was the well-remembered penalty shoot-out in the 1984 European Cup final when his antics helped Liverpool secure the trophy.

Senior Commercial Manager Mark Jenkins said: “Exeter City where delighted to host a dinner with such a legend. Bruce is only in the country for a month so it was a bit of a result.  Special thanks to Dave Owens, the MD of the event sponsors Complete Property Maintenance (CPM), for helping to secure his services.

“He will always be remembered for that eventful night in the European Cup and it was great to hear the story behind it.  I think Bruce must have had a photo with or signed something for every person in the room – legend by name and legend by nature!

David Owens, Managing Director of CPM said: “Liverpool is my home city and I am a life-long supporter of the club having following them across the world, so I wasn't going to miss the chance to meet Bruce and sponsor the event.  The evening was a great success and it was brilliant to spend time in the company of a legend.  My dad, who is a big fan of Bruce, was also able to attend, so that made it extra special.

“Sponsoring the evening was also an excellent opportunity for CPM.  We are an ever-growing business in the region but we like to put something back where we can, so supporting Exeter City FC and football in the community gives us great pleasure.  I would also like to say a special thanks to Mark Jenkins and Donna Greening for all their help and assistance in making the night the memorable one it was.”
