Steve gives reaction to transfer speculation
Exeter City’s Director of Football Steve Perryman confirmed that no clubs have as yet made a transfer bid for teenage midfielder Matt Grimes.
Speculation linking the midfielder away from St James Park has been rife in local and national media in recent days, with reports linking a host of Premier League and Championship clubs with the Exeter City Academy graduate.
The 18-year-old has had an eventful inaugural season since signing his first professional contract last summer, by featuring 37 times for the first team and playing a starring role in the Grecians’ skirmish in the Under-21 Premier League Cup. Grimes was also named the Player of the Year in his maiden campaign as a professional.
And Perryman – also a former central midfielder – has been unsurprised to hear such stellar names linked with Grimes, but stated that the club have not yet received any offers for his services.
“Matt is arguably the best technical player that I have seen come through our Academy during my nine years with the club,” said Steve.
“However there have been no bids so far and no discussions with anyone relating to a transfer.
“So as things stand we’re preparing for Matt to be an Exeter City player next season.
“But I’m not surprised in the slightest to hear that clubs have him on their radar, because of the way he has performed on the pitch and conducted himself off it.”
