City man picks winner in supermarket’s draw
Exeter City midfielder-turned-sweeper Matt Oakley popped down to the Gladstone Road branch of Waitrose last week to draw out the winner of the club’s Matchday Hospitality prize draw. This summer, the supermarket began selling a Brazilian Merlot from the mountain region of Serra Gaucha, which on its label featured a factoid reading: “Brazil’s first ever competitive game was against Exeter City in 1914.’
As well as selling well nationally, the product proved a huge hit in Exeter. Thus the Grecians and Waitrose jointly created a promotional offer at the Gladstone Road store whereby anyone who purchased a bottle became eligible to win a matchday hospitality package for two at a forthcoming Exeter City game at St James Park. The prominent display at Waitrose was set up with the support of Conference & Events Manager Donna Greening and Grecians historian Will Barrett.
Matt, who featured for the Grecians on the historic centenary return to Brazil in July, dropped by at Waitrose to make the draw – and he pulled the name of City fan John Hall out of the hat.
The club will now contact John to make arrangements for him and a guest to enjoy a matchday in style with the Grecians. If you too are interested in spending a matchday in hospitality at St James Park, contact Commercial by ringing 01392 413 954 or emailing commercial@exetercityfc.co.uk.
