Manager lauds boys on Young Lions selection
Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale praised young duo Matt Grimes and Christy Pym on their selection into the England Under-20 squad for a tournament in the Netherlands.Since returning from their spell on international duty – helping England to beat Romania Under-20 in Telford – the duo have been two key performers in the Exeter City side. Of the three home fixtures in September, Matt was named Man of the Match against Mansfield and Oxford, and Christy picked up the award last Saturday’s win against Bury.
The pair will be eligible to face Germany in the tournament, but will fly home ahead of the games against the Netherlands and Turkey in order to represent Exeter against Hartlepool in Sky Bet League 2.
The Exeter boss feels that they have their just rewards for impressing during their time away with Aidy Boothroyd’s Under-20s first time round and for putting in big performances for Exeter since.
“It shows that they did well last time and that selection wasn’t a mistake – they are back in on merit,” said Paul.
“We look forward to seeing how they go – it’s a different type of game, as they’re going to be playing against Germany in Holland next Thursday.
“It’s really good for the club and really good for the players, and it’s another acknowledgement of what we’re doing.
“The boys have shown with the way they have played in the last fortnight that they have stepped up again since their first call-up to the England side. We’re really pleased for them.”
