Match preview: Exeter City v Sheffield United

A look ahead to the game against the Blades

THE GRECIANS’ final pre-season friendly at St James Park this summer takes place tonight when Sheffield United arrive for a 7:30 kick-off.

Blades boss Nigel Adkins brought his Reading side to Devon for a pre-season friendly a year ago, and led to Royals to a 1-0 victory. Now, the man who managed Southampton to back-to-back promotions to the Premier League is returning with his new club to one of his favourite parts of the country.

The two sides last met in competitive action in the 2011/12 League 1 season, and both games ended in high-scoring draws. A memorable 4-4 scoreline at Bramall Lane saw Daniel Nardiello, David Noble, John O’Flynn and James Dunne all get amongst the scoring, while Scot Bennett saved a point with a last-gasp equaliser at St James Park at the season’s end.

Martyn Woolford is the only new Blade for Adkins to choose from tonight – he joined on a free transfer from Millwall just over a week ago.

The next time City are on show at St James Park, it will be for the big season kick-off against Yeovil on Saturday 8th August.
