Grecians forward reacts after netting brace against Southend Under-21s
TWO-GOAL HERO OLLIE WATKINS felt that he could have gotten even more goals after the Grecians beat Southend United 6-0 in the Under-21 Premier League Cup.Watkins' brace was added to by another brace from Matt Jay, as well as goals from Jordan Moore-Taylor and Jamie Reid, who netted from the penalty spot after Watkins had earned the spot-kick.
"I won the penalty, but Reidy was on the penalties," Ollie said. "It doesn't matter if you're on two goals, if you're not on the penalties then you don't get them! Of course I wanted it, but it would have looked bad on me if I'd missed, so I just gave it to our penalty taker in Reidy.
"I pressed the defender, won it, and it fell to Reidy, who held it up. Then, I got it back and cut inside, and I think the full-back came in too narrow, so I took it past him and put it in the bottom corner. For the second one, the ball was crossed in to me at the back stick, all alone. Matt Jay was screaming at me to square it, but I was never going to square it from there; I just passed it into the bottom corner again.
"My confidence was building as each goal went in, and I do feel that I could have gotten more. It's not all about my goals though; it was more important that the team won, and we got a clean sheet to boot.
"I thought the first twenty-five minutes were pretty even - the game wasn't settled, and it was quite nervy. The goal broke the ice for us, and we showed that we were the better team from then on. For the penalty, he just caught my foot as I went past him.
"I think I've been doing really well for these last four to six weeks; we've had a few strong games. I'm going to keep working hard and scoring goals, and hoping that the manager keeps hearing good things about me. Hopefully I'll get my chance soon."
