Winger looking forward to Emirates FA Cup tie with Luton Town
Lee Holmes hopes to replicate Exeter City’s Emirates FA Cup success last season, starting with their first-round game against Luton at home on Saturday.
City welcome Nathan Jones’s team to St James Park on the back of a convincing 3-0 win at Morecambe in League Two. This, along with the excellent cup run City last campaign could help the Grecians get past a team who are sat fourth in the table.
Lee admits City’s third round tie against Liverpool last season was a historic match for the club and one he is keen to repeat.
“It was amazing,” he said. “The build up around the town before the game and the atmosphere at the game was great. And then getting on the score sheet myself, helping to get a memorable result and take us back to the game at Anfield was obviously an amazing time and a great memory from my season last year.”
Despite the excellent home tie against Liverpool, Lee expressed the importance of taking the season game by game and not dwelling on last year’s impressive results.
“Our minds will be firmly fixed on Luton and the job at hand,” he said. “We will be making sure that we do everything in our power to come away with a victory and get to the next round of the cup.”
Lee added that a good cup run could be a boost City’s league campaign.
“The one thing is, winning games brings a momentum that you can only get from winning,” he said. “So whether that’s winning in the cup or in the league, when you’re winning games it breeds confidence and it breeds a momentum that you can’t pick up when you’re losing games.
“So we will try our hardest to make sure we win the game and push on in the season.”
