Countdown to Devon derby: Richards bags late City winner at Home Park

On loan forward Eliot Richards scores the winner against Plymouth in 2014

It is not long until Exeter City's home match with Plymouth Argyle at 1pm on Saturday, September 17. There have been plenty Devon derby moments to remember in recent years and, as we count down the days to another great game at St James Park, we are going recap 10 of the best.

No. 8 Eliot Richards nets the City winner at Home Park
On a Tuesday night at Home Park in March 2014 Eliot Richards scored the Devon derby winner with an 83rd minute goal as Exeter City came from behind to record a 2-1 win against Plymouth Argyle.

Despite both sides having good chances throughout the first half, the deadlock wasn’t broken until the final minute of the opening period when City fell behind through a Reuben Reid penalty, after Danny Coles handled a Matt Parsons’ cross.

The striker, who signed for City yesterday, had more chances throughout the game but failed to beat Artur Krysiak in the Grecians goal again.

But Tisdale’s men battled well and equalised on 69 minutes after a strike from Liam Sercombe, who received the ball centrally to shoot left footed into the top right corner past Luke Cole in the Plymouth goal via a deflection.

Both sides pressed for the winner and both had chances to win the game, but City broke dangerously after an exquisite turn from the lively Tom Nichols, as he sped down the right to cross low for Richards to fire home.

That was one of Richard’s five goals for the Grecians in the 17 appearances he made for the club whilst on loan from Bristol Rovers.
