Five assists and two goals as Ollie starts new year in style

Exeter City forward Ollie Watkins has been nominated for the League Two player of the month award following yet another impressive spell with the Grecians.

It’s the second time in quick succession Ollie has been nominated for the accolade having also been chosen as a candidate for December player of the month award.

The 21-year-old scored two goals during January and he also set up five, including a hat-trick of assists against Colchester.

Ollie got his first assist in a 4-0 win against Leyton Orient and then scored a sublime effort against Grimsby during a 3-0 away victory to bag his first goal of the month.

Ollie then provided an incredible hat-trick of assists during a 3-0 home victory against Colchester United.

The first assist was majestic, after expertly controlling a high ball played into him, he avoided a couple of challenges on the edge of the box and slipped a ball into the path of Reuben Reid who finished calmly.

During the Wycombe game, he claimed one goal and one assist. His drilled cross into the box found its way to Jamaican International Joel Grant who side-footed the ball into the back of the net.

Despite, having being linked with a big money move to a couple of Championships clubs, Ollie stayed focused on his personal performances for the Grecians.

He didn’t disappoint, another tremendous month for the talented forward.

Ollie is up against striker John Marquis, goalkeeper Barry Roche and midfielder Ben Whiteman.

All contenders have been in tremendous form for their clubs.

Doncaster striker Marquis is arguably Ollie’s biggest threat. He scored six goals in January as Doncaster won every game.
