With just three days to go until Matt Taylor's side kick-off the season against Carlisle, ‘The 1000th Goal’ project counts you down to the game with a look back at some of the most iconic goals scored under supporters' ownership.
The 1,000th goal project has been set up as the Trust will more than likely be celebrating reaching 1,000 league goals under supporters ownership this coming season. The tally currently stands at 982 league goals, including play-offs.
Everyone loves a late winner, right? And when that late winner comes from a local lad against your fiercest rivals to complete a comeback, then it's pretty special. That's exactly what happened for goal number 825 under the Trust.
It's the Devon derby on Saturday, April 2, 2016 and the Grecians had fallen behind just before the hour mark after good work from Reuben Reid had allowed Jamille Matt to rifle home from inside the area. Ollie Watkins then levelled the scores with ten minutes to go when his quickly taken shot beat Luke McCormick at his near post.
While there had been an element of good fortune for his first goal, the second was a touch (or seven) of genius. Watkins picked up a David Noble flick 25 yards out from goal, Cruyff turned past Craig Tanner before getting away to Jordan Houghton's left with a set of neat step overs. Having bought himself enough space past the Chelsea loanee, City's academy graduate proceeded to loop in an audacious left footed effort over a stranded McCormick and send St James Park into ecstasy. It was Watkins' sixth goal in seven games as the youngster hit form late in the season.
