Exeter City Ladies’ player-manager Abbie Britton says her side won’t be getting complacent despite having the opportunity to become league champions if they avoid defeat this Sunday against Keynsham Town Development.
The ladies side take on Keynsham at 2pm this Sunday at Speeds Meadow in Cullompton, and Abbie says her side will go into the game with confidence and be focused on sealing promotion.
She explained: “We have to avoid defeat to go up, we’ve taken it each game as it comes, and this game is the next on the ladder.
“It happened earlier on in the season where we lost two on the bounce quite quickly and if you get complacent and assume that you’re going to win games then that’s when it bites you and you lose.”
Abbie’s side go into the match on good form having kept up their fantastic ability to score frequently throughout the season, but with Keynsham also in good form, they’ll be keen to at least halt any early celebrations.
She continued: “We’ve conceded just 10 goals and scored over 60 so recent form is definitely on our side, but it’s on Keynsham’s as well because I don’t think they’ve dropped any points recently so it should be a fantastic game.
“We’ve got no recent injuries, of course we lost our captain Emily Toogood a couple of games ago now. She’s side-lined for quite a while, so other than that, we’ve got a full squad to pick from so it’s great.”
Abbie says the side are very much moving in the right direction and wants to keep up that momentum with support coming from all areas.
“It’s a good place to be and it’s a good club to potentially be involved with,” said Abbie. “We’re moving in the right direction off the field from the support we’ve had from the Supporters’ Trust, CITY Community Trust and the football club itself. We saw Buckland go up last season and they’re now third in their league so that’s where we aspire to be.
“It would be brilliant to get some people down, it’s the top two teams in the league so it’s going to be a proper football contest, regardless of what’s at stake. If we avoid defeat, then we win the league, so we’d love all Grecians to get down there and support us.
