Highly coveted as a youth, Lee first rose to prominence as a trainee with Wimbledon.
Pursued by many of England’s elite, he eventually signed for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in December 2003. However, having spent the next few seasons out on loan, he moved on to Ipswich Town in 2009. A tireless and resourceful winger, who can also play as a second striker, he went on to make 100 league appearances for the Tractor Boys, before enjoying spells at Millwall and Gillingham. He signed for the Grecians in July 2018, becoming one of Matt Taylor’s first signings.
45 – Although he made his breakthrough on the books at Wimbledon, Lee is one of a number of current City players who hail from the surrounding area. Born in Taunton, just 45 minutes away, he will be hoping that his return to the south west heralds a promotion winning campaign for the Grecians.
65 – Handed the number seven shirt on arrival, Lee made his debut on the season’s opening day, when City played host to Carlisle United. Entering the fray in the 65th minute, his fresh legs helped the Grecians to ride out a Cumbrian fight back, securing a momentum building 3-1 victory.
225 – Impressed with his quick adjustment to life at St James Park, Matt Taylor awarded Lee his first start, away at Cambridge United. Unwearied by the 225-mile journey to the Abbey Stadium, he played the full 90 minutes, helping the Grecians to a 2-0 win.
42 – After a quiet couple of months, Lee opened his City account with a stunning strike away at Crewe Alexandra. With the clock ticking into the 42nd minute, and the honours even on a sopping wet pitch, he brought a moment of sparkle to what was otherwise a dreary afternoon, lashing a long-range effort into the top corner. Lee’s goal ultimately proved crucial, handing the Grecians their first win in seven games.
31 – A crucial cog in Matt Taylor’s squad, Lee has made a total of 31 appearances in red and white across all competitions thus far this season, claiming one goal and one assist. He will be hoping to add to both tallies in the coming months.
