Exeter City is delighted to hear that former employee David Lee has been appointed as the new sporting director at New York City FC.
David first started working with Exeter City when he was studying a masters in performance analysis at Cardiff University and became the club’s very first analyst, working with the club as we were promoted from League Two in the 2008/09 season. He then continued in his role until 2011, before he was head hunted by New York Red Bulls.
Since leaving City, David has gone on to have incredible success in the USA becoming head of player recruitment at NYCFC in 2014, before going onto take the role of technical director in 2017. And, following the recent departure of Claudio Reyna to Austin FC, David has now been promoted to sporting director.
Speaking about the appointment NYCFC CEO Brad Sims, said: “In David Lee, we have a natural and incredibly talented replacement to continue the fantastic work that he and Claudio have achieved together. He’s been pivotal in signing key NYCFC players and creating the long-term vision of the first team roster. Winning trophies is something our club and players want and David’s knowledge and expertise will lead us into the next phase of NYCFC’s evolution.”
Exeter City chairman Julian Tagg added: “We are delighted for David. During his time at Exeter City we could see he was an incredibly hard working and talented individual.
“As a club we pride ourselves on the fact that we not only help talented and hard-working footballers achieve their potential on the pitch, but we also do the same for all our employees. We have taken great joy from David’s achievements and we wish him continued success at NYCFC.”
