🗓 Football and War networking event

The Football and War Network is coming to St James Park on Friday October 4, 2019 for the latest in a series of seminars held all across the UK.

The Network is made up of military historians with an interest in football and football club historians, and has been established with support from Oxford United, the National Football Museum, Soccer History, Back Press, and the University of Wolverhampton.

At St James Park, the network is collaborating with the ECFC Supporters Trust History Group and the ECFC Museum Trust, to deliver a series of fascinating short talks from ECFC Historians, researchers, and invited guests.

The event, titled 'Grecians at War: Commemorating our Heritage' will begin at the Park at 1.30pm, and will contain the following content:

Supporter’s Trust and ECFC Museum Trustee, Martin Weiler, will open proceedings with a presentation titled ‘Commemorating the Exeter City War Dead’, looking at how the Club and Trust have researched and remembered those with ECFC connections who were killed in the First & Second World Wars.

The Illustrator and Cartoonist, Tim Godden, follows with his talk ‘Football and the Great War: the Stories Behind the Drawings’, which will provide examples, detail, and the background to some of his superb images.

ECFC Historian and Author of Have You Ever Played Brazil & The Story of Exeter’s St James’s Park: Land of Grecian Glory, Aidan Hamilton, will then explore the 'Impact of the World Wars on Exeter City Football Club', drawing on the extensive archival research that has gone into each of his publications.

Finally, the talks will come to a close with University of Exeter Professor & Grecian Archive Co-founder, Gabriella Giannachi, who will tell the story of the ECFC Museum through her presentation ‘The Journey from Cupboards to a Stadium-wide Museum’.

The event is free and all are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.

A free stadium tour is also available on the day, beginning at 11am – please report to reception on arrival should you wish to participate.

The event is also being supported by the Senior Reds fan group, the University of Exeter, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, as part of the Celebrating Our Heritage: ECFC Outreach Programme.
