🔎 The Opposition: Oldham Athletic (H)

Exeter City are in mid-week action at St James Park, as they face Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League Two, looking to make it back to back wins.

Here’s all that you will need to know about Tuesday’s opponents…

  • Founded: 1895
  • Nickname: The Latics
  • Honours: Division Three (North): 1952/53 Division Three: 1973/74 Division Two: 1990/91 Lancashire Cup: 1907/08, 1966/67

Oldham Athletic were originally founded in 1895, under the name of Pine Villa FC. It wasn’t until their neighbours Oldham County F.C dissolved in 1899 that they adopted their current name of Oldham Athletic, as they moved to Boundary Park.

After playing their first few years in the local Lancashire league, Oldham were invited into the Football League in 1907 following their title win, where they were placed in Division Two.

The Latics were regular competitors in the highest of England’s divisions in their early day, where they often played in Division One. Despite a difficult phase in the mid 1900s, Oldham began fighting near the top divisions during the early 1990s where they competed in the Premier League for a brief stint.

In the modern era, Oldham have found themselves mostly in League 1, where they played for over twenty years. Last season was the first time in decades that the Latics found themselves in England’s fourth tier, where they achieved a 14th placed finish after a difficult first season.
