đź“ť Match Preview: Exeter City Women vs Callington Town

Exeter City will begin their preparations for the Devon County Cup Semi Final with the visit of Callington Town in a Friendly fixture this Sunday.

After last weekend’s victory over Feniton, the Grecians have been drawn away to Marine Academy Plymouth on May 9 and will compete for a place in the Final for the second successive season.

Callington Town will prove ideal preparation for the occasion, as they compete in the same division as City’s semi final opponents. The Cornish side won two of their three League fixtures last season, beating Bideford and Bishops Lydeard before the Season fell victim to COVID restrictions. Gabi Alphous was Cally’s main goal scoring threat in the shortened season, scoring four times in all competitions. Two players who may be present on Sunday have previous Exeter City connections. Marika Ghiglia played a major role in City’s rise through the League’s in the early 2010’s, a regular at left full back, Marika was a Grecian for five successful seasons. Kelsie Miller is another former Red, making thirty appearances between 2017 and 2019, the midfielder was part of the successful title winning side of that period and signed for Callington Town in 2020.

Whilst City comfortably progressed past Feniton at the weekend, Callington’s return to football saw an entertaining  3-2 win at Liverton United the previous weekend, goals coming from Chloe Williams, Katlyn Bentley and Samantha Burnham. The last time the two sides met was in the pre season period of 2020, a thrilling contest saw the Grecians win 5-3 in Cornwall, as both sides readied for the campaign to come.

With this the last fixture before the semi-final, as there is no fixture next weekend, Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley will be keen for the team to continue the slick football that proved so successful on Sunday. The fixture will also offer another chance for a new look defensive line up to settle for the competitive fixtures ahead.
