Exeter City Women will finally return to league action this weekend, Swindon Town are the visitors as the team play their first game of the season at the Cliff Hill (2.45pm Kick Off)
Swindon made a promising start to the 2021/2022 season, drawing all three of their opening fixtures, including holding the league’s current top two, AFC Bournemouth and Cheltenham Town.
However, since then, points have been hard to come by, with only three league wins this season, the most recent coming on Thursday evening, as Town defeated Larkhall Athletic with thanks to a last minute winner from Anne Colston. Meg Attenborough and Ellie Olds have been the two key forward players for Town this season, both with four goals, Attenborough scoring twice in the recent defeat to Portishead. Jamie Lloyd Davies' side will travel to Devon in good spirit, having not only beaten Larkhall during the week, but also winning the Wiltshire County Cup last weekend.
Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley’s side have enjoyed considerable Cup success in recent months, with an impressive run in both the FA Cup and the League Cup Plate, as well as securing a return to the Devon County Cup Final. However, that has come at a price, as City are now playing catch up on their League campaign.
With the Grecians having as many as seven games in hand on some sides in the division, the next month will be crucial to gain ground if they want to be in the title race conversation when their season finishes with fixtures against the current top two.
City’s last league outing saw a disappointing defeat to Maidenhead United and, in terms of title aspirations, the team are now entering must win territory. Due to the uncertainty over the pitch at Speeds Meadow, the game has been moved to the Cliff Hill this weekend, a pitch that City should feel comfortable with as it is the venue for weekly training.
With three home games in the next eleven days, Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley will be keen to get back to winning ways and gain some of that Pre Christmas momentum as the season reaches its conclusion.
