Esme Kilburn-Thompson has signed for Torquay United, as the young forward departs the Grecians in search of more playing time.
Progressing through the Girls development Centre, Esme made her debut in September of 2020, scoring twice in a win over Poole Town. An FA Cup goal against AEK BOCO followed in early December, with Esme winning the Supporters Club Player of the Month award for her impressive early season form.
It would the Devon County Cup Final that put the seventeen year old in the spotlight, her two goals against Plymouth Argyle were enough to give City the County Cup for the first time in six years. It was a significant performance to end a fine first season, Esme picking up the Young Female Player of the Year Award for her accomplishments.
Unfortunately, the 2021/2022 Season has seen a lack of opportunity, with Sarah Stacey and Connie Pengelly both in such fine form. Esme has spent recent weeks playing an important role in the resurgence of the City Development team, hitting a staggering eleven goals in just three appearances.
With the forward’s desire to continue her development at a higher level, it has been agreed for a move to Torquay United, who play in the South West Regional Premier Division. City joint Manger Abbie Britton is sad to see Esme depart. “It is important for young players to get game time; it is vital in any players development. We have some in form forwards at the Club right now and it has been difficult for Esme to get the game time she wants. We will miss her; she is such a great girl and she will do well at Torquay. I hope to see her back in red and white in the future.”
As ‘One Of Our Own,’ we wish Esme the best of luck for the rest of the season and look forward to seeing her continue her progress.
