Exeter City Women return from a Christmas break with a promotion push on their minds, as Maidenhead United are the visitors this Sunday (kick off 2pm).
Despite sharing the same division for three seasons, due to curtailments, this will only be the second time the two teams have met. Goals from Abbie Britton (2) and Sophie Gillies saw the Grecians to a comfortable win in January of 2020.
Maidenhead have a steady season so far, victories over Larkhall, Poole and Portishead sustaining their position of 6th in the division, one below City. Nicole Barrett and Kirsty Matthews have provided the main goal threat for Ryan Taylor's side, scoring five goals apiece, with the majority of the Magpies games tending to be closely contested.
City went into the Christmas break in the best possible way, a three goal victory at Southampton Women's FC sealing a place in the FA Cup Fourth Round for only the third time in the Club's history. After a busy few weeks of strength and conditioning sessions and training, Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley will be keen to see their team return to action in the same dominant form.
With Cup Competitions taking priority, this is the Grecians' first League fixture in over three months, leaving the team with ground to make up on the leaders. However, a successful run whilst playing those games in hand, would see City narrow the gap to within a point.
With the fixture being moved to the Sports Hub at Exwick, due to recent poor weather affecting the surface at Speeds Meadow, this is the teams first appearance in Exeter since the hugely successful fixture at St James Park. A perfect opportunity then to go and support the team in their search of silverware in 2022.
