Exeter City Women take a break from the pressures of a title chase as they head to Devon FA Headquarters for the Women’s Senior County Cup Final on Friday evening - their opponents will be Plymouth Argyle in a repeat of the 2021 Final.
Ryan Perks’ side have had an inconsistent season, picking up some vital points along the way to keep them in prime position to avoid relegation in their final two games. A strong February saw the Greens pick up wins over Bridgwater, Cheltenham Town and London Bees, however a run of six consecutive defeats followed, with last weekend’s draw at Billericay stopping the losing run. Seven games without a victory is a sequence Argyle will be keen to put right on Friday evening.
The Pilgrims will offer a considerable threat to the Grecians backline with the pace of Amber Pollock and Charlotte Whitmore, Pollock with five goals this season and an impressive six Opposition Player of the Match Awards. Midfield may well be where the game is most competitive, Zoe Cunningham, Kayley Lane and Georgia Wilson all strong tier three players.
With an all-important League game against Swindon on the 30th April, and having played under the constraint of ‘must win’ scenarios for several weeks, City will view this as a pressure free evening. The Greens going into the game as favourites and no doubt keen to emphasis the difference between the two tiers of women’s football.
Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley have experienced the highs and lows of the County Cup in recent years, this the Grecians third consecutive finals appearance, but they will be confident of showcasing a competitive game before the following weekend’s huge game against Swindon Town in the league finale.
