Exeter City Women face a top of the table clash on Sunday with Cardiff City Ladies visiting the Exwick Sports Hub, a win for the Grecians would see them head the division for the first time this season.
Cardiff are enjoying a near faultless campaign. Fifteen successive wins is about as formidable away to begin a season as is imaginable, and it was a run that saw Jamie Phillip’s team lead the division and progress in all cups heading into 2023. The two teams met back in September, just three games into that impressive run, Chloe Lloyd at the double as the Dragons ran riot in a 5-0 victory.
However, the new year has seen a more mixed set of results for Phillip’s side. Defeat in the League Cup at Plymouth Argyle was followed by a first league defeat at home to Moneyfields. Yet despite those two defeats, Cardiff have shown their resilience by bouncing back with two strong performances against Swindon Town and Burnley. The Dragons win in Lancashire last weekend sending them into the fifth round of the FA Cup, a significant achievement for a tier four team.
With over eighty goals already to their total, Cardiff pose a number of threats at the weekend. Chloe Lloyd and Cori Williams have thirty-five goals between them in all competitions, Lloyd only one behind the Grecians own Sarah Stacey in the race for the Golden Boot. Ellie Sargent and Kerry Bartlett have also provided goals for the Dragons, however Sargent is currently recovering from injury whilst Bartlett has returned to her former side, Keynsham Town.
In consideration of Cardiff’s record this season, the fact City could overhaul them with victory on Sunday is testament to the Grecians own consistency. At the half way point in the campaign, a win for either team at the weekend would be unlikely to prove definitive, but it would certainly give a strong indication as to where the title may end up come May. Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley’s side were humbled in South Wales in September and will be keen to underline their improvement on Sunday and with it put themselves firmly in the race for promotion.
