📝 Women's Match Preview: Oxford United (A)

Exeter City Women return to action this weekend as they make the trip to Oxford United for their first pre-season fixture.

The Yellows enjoyed an outstanding season in the Southern Premier last year, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Championship with a final day defeat at Ipswich Town.

The retention of Manager Liam Gilbert was confirmed this past week, however United have seen the departure of several of last season's key performers this summer.

Top Goalscorer Carly Johns, Captain Riva Casley, Sophie Baker, Cat Beaver, Tash Stephens, Goalkeeper Rosie Kite and Naomi Cole have all decided to move on as Gilbert reshapes the squad for another promotion push. The arrival of Southampton's Phoebe Williams on Wednesday was an indication that the rebuild is now fully underway.

Former Bridgwater stars Leah Burridge and Amy Godard are expected to feature for United as City will face a stern test in Oxfordshire.

New Summer signings Amber Pollock, Tash Knapman and Beth Ireland will all travel, whilst Becky Dandridge will feature following a full recovery from an injury that kept her out of the majority of last season.

Emily Toogood is still recovering from a broken foot, although is back in light training, whilst Zoe Cunningham will have to wait for her Grecians debut as she serves a suspension carried over from last season.

Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley's side will have high expectations for the 2023/24 season, yet there may be no tougher challenge ahead then Sunday's game, as they take on a talented Oxford United team who will have similar aspirations in the league above.
