Devon’s only dedicated community touch rugby team are the latest group to benefit from Exeter City and Carpetright’s ‘We Win You Win’ competition.
Thanks to club sponsor Carpetright, south west based grassroots sports teams can apply for a grant of £500 every time Exeter City wins a match. And the latest winners, following our 2-0 victory over Cambridge last month, are Exeter Touch Rugby Club.
Alex Jopling, from Exeter Touch Rugby Club, said: "We are the only dedicated community touch rugby club in Devon and play all over the south of England, all year round. We have over 200 members and offer something for everyone, whatever the motivation for playing.
“Every week we run friendly and inclusive community touch rugby as well as club training sessions. We have set up our club to be as inclusive and open as possible, so no membership is required with new players always welcome, and the first session is always free.”
Alex added: “The club is completely run by unpaid volunteers, and currently without a dedicated home. We have extensive facility hire costs and these have been on the rise in recent years. Our squad also have the considerable costs of tournament entry fees and travelling to national events.
“We’re keen to provide more support to our players through securing funds which can help us cover the costs of hiring pitches and buying equipment, allowing us to keep costs for our players as low as possible. We’re also exploring ways of supporting players from disadvantaged backgrounds, to make the sport more inclusive and accessible at all levels. Any funds won through this great competition would support the club towards these goals.”
Applications to the We Win You Win competition can be made every time that Exeter City win a match. Teams can apply for the fund by sending a pitch to Carpetright, explaining who they are and why they deserve help. Email entries must be no more than 350 words and should be sent to wewinyouwin@carpetright.co.uk
