Exeter City Women head down to Cornwall on Sunday for an FA Cup First Round clash against Helston Athletic Women, the Grecians hoping to secure an eleventh successive victory in all competitions.
Helston have enjoyed a strong season in the South West Regional Western Division, currently sat third in the table and fresh off a victory over table topping Ilminster Town. Success against AEK Boco in the third-round qualifier set up the weekend’s tie for Helston, Liz O’Reilly, Abi Locke and Beth Prouse with the goals in a 3-1 win in Bristol. Prouse has been particularly impressive for the Blues this season, eleven goals in her six games, including seven in the FA Cup.
Paul Parfitt’s side will be hoping for a big crowd to cheer them on at Kellaway Park, this weekend representing the first time a team representing Helston has made the FA Cup first round for both Men and Women’s teams and, with that in mind, one of the Club’s biggest games in recent history.
Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley will no doubt look to utilise the strength of their squad on Sunday and with fifty-seven goals to their name already this season the Grecians will travel to Cornwall in confident mood. However, a wet afternoon in Portishead, with City heavily fancied, ended up seeing an exit from the competition last season and Britton and Wakley will be keen for no repeat of that disappointment on Sunday.
