Gary Caldwell has given his thoughts ahead of City's trip to Port Vale on Saturday.
The Grecians head to Vale Park seven matches unbeaten after Tuesday's late comeback draw at Leyton Orient but face a Valiants side fighting for their lives in the League One relegation zone. They will want to make amends for their 3-0 defeat at Peterborough on Wednesday.
"We have to make sure we go there and out motivation is high. They are fighting for their lives and that can raise their game to a different level from what they've been at this season," Gary said.
"Later in the season, teams down the bottom pick up results they haven't earlier on. First of all we recover today and then we prepare as always in terms of training and the analysis.
"Everyone has to make sure our motivation is high. What do we want to achiece before the end of the season? What do we want this football club to be? That is what is important over the next three games, none more so than Saturday.
