Gary Caldwell has given his thoughts as the Grecians prepare to take on League Two side Chesterfield at St James Park on Saturday, hoping to make it to the third round of the Emirates FA Cup for the first time since 2021.
City made it into round two after an astonishing 5-3 win over National League side Barnet, and Caldwell hopes this time around his side can make it a little easier on themselves, though facing a difficult test in the Spireites who are adapting well to their first season back in League Two.
"Last year in this competition they beat Portsmouth so they know how to beat teams higher up the football pyramid, and we have to be at our very best if we want to get into round three amongst the big boys.
"What we are a side is learning from the game we have just had an implementing principles we feel can be better. We always focus on ourselves and on the game, not looking ahead, and we will work on that tomorrow. If we take that into the game, I believe we can beat anyone."
