Women's Match Preview: AFC Wimbledon (H)

Women's Match preview graphic for AFC Wimbledon (H)

For the first time in over a month, Exeter City Women return to Devon for a league fixture, as they host AFC Wimbledon at Coach Road on Sunday.

Back-to-back away games in the South East yielded three points for Abbie Britton's side, as a good win against Billericay was followed up by a cruel late defeat at league leaders Ipswich Town. That level of performance can be used as momentum though for another tough test, as City face another recently promoted side in AFC Wimbledon.

The Grecians will be looking to pick up their first home win of 2025 and continue to push at the top of the table with just six league games remaining this season.

Coach Road

Promotion to the third tier of women's football meant that City had to search for a new home alongside St James Park for the 2024/25 season, resulting in Newton Abbot's Coach Road as the team's second home venue.

The Opposition

The Dons had a strong summer of squad recruitment, with nine players added to last year’s title winning side. Leanne Bell moved to south-west London from Billericay Town with Georgia Clifford returning to football after a brief spell with Swindon Town last season.

Kau’inohea Solomon-Taylor and Rosie Kite are familiar faces to the Grecians after their summer signing from Moneyfields. Solomon-Taylor will certainly be one to watch for Abbie Britton’s side as she scored three times against them last season.

AFC Wimbledon have had a steady first season to date, victories over Cheltenham Town, Milton Keynes, Watford, Billericay Town, Oxford United and Gwalia United confirming a comfortable sixth position in the current league table. Foster’s side have found the return from the Christmas break tougher, an excellent win at Oxford United (1-0) has been followed by defeats to Hashtag United (3-0) and Plymouth Argyle (1-2.)

Abbie Britton's thoughts

💬 "If the players use Sunday as motivation to spur them on for the rest of the year we'll have a very promising final six games." Abbie Britton on taking the positives from last week's defeat against Ipswich, Ishbel Zuurmond after her 50th appearance and Sunday's match against AFC Wimbledon ⬇️

Previous Encounter

The two teams have met once already this season, Emily Donovan putting the Don’s a goal up before a spectacular Zoe Cunningham equaliser. The Grecians were then reduced to ten players under the ten minute sin bin ruling, the home side taking full advantage as they hit three goals in that period with Ashlee Hincks (2) and Elleanor Dorey sealing the points in a 4-1 win victory ⬇️
