Women's Match Preview: Gwalia United (A)

Match Preview Gwalia

Exeter City Women return to league action this weekend with a visit to South Wales to take on Gwalia United, the formerly named Cardiff City Ladies.

Manager Fern Burrage-Male has had a productive summer, with a host of new signings arriving at the Newport Stadium. Tia Asker, Ellie Lake, Jessie Taylor, Shurima Vine, Isobel Newns, Maisie Miller, Kylie Nolan and Casi Gregson have all been added to the Gwalia squad, offering a mix of experience and high potential for the season ahead. Burrage-Male has also retained some familiar names with Thierry-Jo Gauvain, Chloe Lloyd, Laura O’Sullivan-Jones, Libby Piggott, Emily Poole and Ellie Sargent key performers in Cardiff City Ladies South West League One title success in 2023.

It has been a mixed start for Gwalia, an opening day defeat at Billericay Town (4-0) was followed by a hard fought win over newly promoted AFC Wimbledon, Emily Poole with the winning strike. League Cup success over Bristol Rovers (2-0) underlines United’s strong record at the Newport Stadium, a heavy defeat at Oxford United last weekend (4-0) a result that Burrage-Male will be keen to see her team bounce back from on Sunday.

City’s last league visit to South Wales saw a disastrous afternoon, the then Cardiff City Ladies running riot in a 5-0 victory. A strong start to this season for Abbie Britton’s team will be one that they will look to build on at the weekend, Gwalia establishing themselves as a competitive team in tier three and one the Grecians will need to be at their best to take all three points from.
