Women's Match Preview: Ipswich Town (H)

Exeter City Women vs Ipswich Women

Exeter City Women face their biggest challenge of the season as Ipswich Town head to St James Park for a first ever league fixture between the two sides on Sunday in a 1pm kick-off.

The Suffolk side only missed out on promotion to the Championship on goal difference

in 2023 but found a run at the title that much harder last season, finishing fourth in the division.

Joe Sheehan has had a productive summer in the transfer market, recruiting a host of talented players with the potential and experience to take the Tractor Girls to promotion this term.

Angela Addison and Ella Rutherford have moved east from Charlton Athletic, Natalia Negri and Shauna Guyatt both signing from Crystal Palace. Grace Garrad and Charlotte Fleming were part of the Lewes and Watford squads of last season, whilst Isabella Fisher signed for Town on a dual registration with Arsenal. With last season’s key performers Sophie Peskett, Lenna Williams and Natasha Thomas all still in Blue for the season, Sheehan’s side look set to be title contenders this year.

A pre-season victory at AFC Bournemouth saw Addison on target as she hit a brace in a 4-0 win, defeats against Championship side London City Lionesses and Wolverhampton Wanderers completed a challenging build up.

With the fixture generator setting a testing start to the campaign, Town eased past follow promotion hopefuls Oxford United 3-0 on opening day, Peskett at the double and Lucy O’Brien the goal scorers. Another impressive win at home to Hashtag United last weekend and a derby victory at Norwich on Thursday evening has set Town up perfectly for Sunday’s game against the table-topping Grecians.

Abbie Britton's thoughts

Before her team's match against Ipswich Town at SJP this Sunday, Abbie Britton sat down to share her thoughts.

After three wins in their first three games, Abbie is keeping her side grounded ahead of what she

“It’s been a dream start for us, if you had offered us six points at the start we would’ve taken it,” Abbie said. “But nothing’s won in September, we’ve got to remember that and keep the girls grounded.”
