Assistant manager Wayne Carlisle has given his assessment as City were beaten at the second round stage of the Carabao Cup on penalties at Gillingham.
Carlisle was standing in for manager Matt Taylor, who was absent following the birth of his first child, and believes City did not have enough quality in the match to win.
"It felt like penalties was the only way that match was going to be decided," he said.
"We are of course are disappointed, neither side really did enough to win the match. We didn't start attacks too well and missed chances to play passes, and that's something we will need to look at.
"There were times we should have played the ball through, we didn't disrupt their back line well enough."
