Gary Caldwell has apologised to Exeter City supporters following the 2-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
First half goals from Conor Bradley and Dion Charles gave City a mountain to climb in the second 45, which they were unable to do.
"I can only apologise to the supporters for not giving them what they came here to see today," Gary said after the defeat.
"I'm really disappointed because first half we didn't get going and too many players were below the standards that they set themselves.
"We gifted Bolton too many chances in front of our goal - they scored two and could've scored more - and we gave ourselves too much to do in the second half.
"We've tried a number of different things to stop conceding sloppy goals but it's still happening. We have to better in duels right across the pitch. There has to be more intensity."
