Matt Taylor has given a pre-season update the club prepare for the final friendly at Torquay United before the season kicks off at Lincoln on July 30th.
Thursday marked the first time the team trained on the pitch since it’s summer renovation, and both Matt and his players are delighted with the hard work of Head Groundsman Chaz and his pitch team over the summer.
“It’s fantastic as always – he’s a superstar. We’re two and a half weeks from the first home game against Port Vale and it’s in a fantastic state.
“It’s not only Chaz but everyone in his ground staff team and the investment the club has made on it.
With the penultimate opportunity to train ahead of Saturday’s trip to Torquay now over, all attentions turn to the fixture at Plainmoor, with a healthy crowd expected for the first meeting between the two teams at the venue since 2013. Taylor will be managing the fitness of his squad for the game.
“Tuesday we treated pretty seriously and Saturday will be all about getting minutes in those players who are yet to play a full 90 as yet, so hopefully Grounds, Stubbs and MJ will get minutes.
“There’s a few we’re still looking after, but in terms of what I’ve seen, most of the group are where we want them to be.
With the Sky Bet League One opener a little over a week away, Matt is keen to bolster his squad with some additions in the transfer window, and is expectant that new signings are just over the horizon.
“I hope and expect we’ll have some bodies in [before Lincoln]. We’ve been trying for the last six to eight weeks but we haven’t been successful. A lot more players and clubs are understanding that the season is a week away and they want to play games, so a lot more players will become available.
“We can only offer what we can offer, but we’re confident of bringing some players in that improve. We can’t just bring players in for the sake of it. We are what we are as a model and I have no qualms about that.”
