✍️ Pierce Sweeney pens new deal

We are delighted to announce that Pierce Sweeney has signed a new deal with the club, which extends his stay at St James Park until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The 27-year-old's deal is just reward for his stellar 2021/22 season as he helped the Grecians claim that memorable ascension to the League One for the first time in ten years.

Sweeney was a mainstay in the Grecians line up in our promotion winning campaign, playing 49 times in all competitions, providing two assists and was part of a defence that kept 19 league clean sheets.

Speaking to club at Monday's kit promo shoot, Sweeney is thrilled to remain an Exeter City player for a further two years.

"I'm really happy to extend my stay here longer," the Irishman said.

"I was due up at the end of this season but I've been rewarded. To go into a League One season after the really successful season last year, with an extra year on top as well is really really pleasing for me.

"This is my club and it's home for me now. My family are settled and I've got a house, I'm very familiar with the city and this football club, and the people associated with this football club."

Last season was an unforgettable campaign, and Sweeney was more excited than most having been a part of the side who had missed on out promotion in his five previous years the club, and he is looking forward to the challenges of League One.

"It's been a strange summer as it's the longest break I've had, with no-play-offs or Covid or anything like that.

"The lads are all still on a bit of a high and I'd expect us to be hitting the season hard in the first five or ten games.

"When the fixtures came out I straight away looked at the first, last, and festive games. We're going to be facing some big teams and we're really looking forward to the challenge. It's a really exciting time at this football club."
