Josh Key gave his thoughts as City recorded another hard earned point on the road at Derby County.
Key started the game in his new-found position on the right of a back three as the Grecians earned their sixth clean sheet of the season.
"We knew what we had to do tonight. It's a fresh start for us with the new manager in and we tried to do what we wanted to implement," he said.
"It's different having Gary on the touchline. He wanted us to be brave and said it was ok to make mistakes.
"After the first half we knew what the game would look like and we knew we had to hold on to it. They're a good team but they didn't threaten the goal too much, so we're happy with that."
