Exeter City Women will be looking to continue their winning run with a visit to Portishead Town this evening, the Grecians currently sit top of the division and will be hoping to extend their lead in order place pressure on Cardiff City before their game on Thursday.
Portishead have enjoyed a promising start to the season, building on last season’s creditable 8th place finish. Strong summer recruitment has seen the acquisition of former Bridgwater United players Ellie Strippel and Ellie Bell, talented Ffian James signed from Barry Town and Rhian Robbins returns further south after her brief spell at Cheltenham Town at the end of last season.
After a tough start, with heavy defeats against Cardiff and AFC Bournemouth, Town picked up wins against Larkhall Athletic and Maidenhead United. A home defeat to Moneyfields dented momentum, but a thumping win over Southampton Women’s FC coupled with a penalty shootout victory at Moneyfields sees the North Somerset side in winning form going into this evening’s contest.
Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley’s side fared well against Portishead last season, with victories both home and away, but will be in no doubt as to the considerable challenge this evening. City will break from league action for the next few weeks, with County Cup, FA Cup and League Cup fixtures all taking place, so it will be of pressing importance to make sure three points are registered tonight and the Grecians return to the top of the league table.
