Gary Caldwell has given his assessment as his side were beaten 3-1 away at Peterborough United.
The Scot has lamented the Grecians' defensive display as Peterborough eased into a 2-0 lead at half time, before adding to their tally in the second half after Rekeem Harper had pulled one back.
"It's another poor start where we have gifted them far too many goals and opportunities," Caldwell said.
"In the first half we were not ready to compete and work hard off the ball. We had a fantastic reaction in the second half and should have been level, but we just didn't find the right pass at times.
"We have to improve and be better - and that was the message, that everyone has to be ready to get into the team because we are gifting the opposition.
"It should not take being 2-0 down to motivate, to inspire, to run and to fight for this football club."
