Gary Caldwell has given his reaction as City suffered defeat against Derby County at St James Park.
David McGoldrick's double downed the Grecians, who pulled one back through Jack Sparkes late on, but Caldwell was pleased with aspects of the performance.
"I thought we played well in possession for large periods, especially in the first half," he said.
"We created overloads and had rotations in midfield, restricting them to very little. In the second half we lost our way and started going too long - we didn't have the personnel to do that and they scored in that period.
"All credit to the players, when the game looks finished we score and created opportunities and gave ourselves a chance. But it's more of the same really against another really good side.
"We were missingh key players and the firepower we're missing is incredible. You can see that in the difference in attacking options both teams had tonight."
